“I’m hungry!”
“Hi Hungry, I’m Dad.”
It’s a safe bet that most of us have heard our fair share of dad jokes over the years… the understated hero of modern comedy. The best dad jokes are the ones you see coming a mile away which don’t have you rolling around the floor in stitches. It’s more of an uncomfortable groan followed by your head in your hands. You turn to your Dad and he grins… he knows that his joke was totally predictable and that his punchline has had the desired effect of making you wince with embarrassment. His job is done!
Dad jokes are an essential part of any father’s life and are provoked by their children’s behaviour or questions. They make fun of whiny and needy children much to their child’s frustration and to Dad’s amusement. What had us giggling uncontrollably at aged 4 does not have the same impact at aged 16! We don’t care that Dad’s burnt pizza needed to be on aloha setting – GROAN!
Dad humour will persist as long as there are fathers in the world. We will go full cycle and the torment of being an innocent victim of dad jokes will be something that we go on to inflict on our children and so the cycle begins again!
Are you willing to indulge your Dad’s dire sense of humour? We have plenty of gifts this Christmas that he will just LOVE! We all know how important it is to smile and laugh. It is beneficial for our health as well as our mental state. Studies have shown that humour can help men release stress and deal with depression. Does this mean that by “putting up” with Dad’s overly simplistic jokes which we love to hate, we are improving our own mental health as well as his? Oh go on Dad, tell us again, what’s brown and sticky…
